Celebrating 10 Years | 2024

The Society for Neuroscience launched its gold open-access journal in November 2014. As founding Editor-in-Chief Christophe Bernard said in his editorial, “eNeuro at Ten: Just Warming Up,” “eNeuro was designed to serve the community of neuroscientists.”

To celebrate 10 years of eNeuro, throughout the year the blog highlighted findings of some of the most-cited papers published in each year of the journal’s history.

Microbiome Depletion Increases Fentanyl Self-Administration and Alters the Striatal Proteome Through Short-Chain Fatty Acids
Rebecca S. Hofford, Katherine R. Meckel, Elizabeth J. Wiser, Weiwei Wang, Jonathon P. Sens, Michelle Kim, Arthur Godino, TuKiet T. Lam, and Drew D. Kiraly

In this rodent study, Hofford and colleagues explored the gut microbiome’s role in fentanyl-seeking behavior. Knockdown of the microbiome enhanced drug-seeking behavior and shifted the fentanyl dose–response curve. This study points to a new targetable mechanism to treat opioid use disorder and the proteomic data may inform future work on how the gut microbiome influences general reward processing.

Sex-Specific Acute Cerebrovascular Responses to Photothrombotic Stroke in Mice
Joanna Raman-Nair, Gregory Cron, Kathleen MacLeod, and Baptiste Lacoste

Many studies investigating post-stroke outcomes overlook sex differences. Raman-Nair et al. addressed that oversight in their investigation of cerebral blood flow regulation following photothrombotic stroke in mice. The authors uncovered marked sex differences in the acute cerebrovascular response involving gonadal female sex hormones and rho-kinase 2.
